STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Alice Kim played the back nine at Stanford Golf Course at even-par on Friday and Chelsea Stelzmiller was just one over on the front, as both shot 4-over 75 to help the UC Davis women's golf team remain tied for 16th after two rounds of the NCAA Division I West Regional.
The Aggies fired a 23-over 307 team score during the second round, a one-stroke improvement from Thursday's first round. Stelzmiller moved up five spots into a tie for 21st at just 7-over on the individual leaderboard while Kim jumped seven spots into a tie for 28th at 8-over.
Senior Kimberly Johnson cut four strokes from her opening-round 81 to shoot 77 on Friday and is tied for 85th at 16-over, freshman Demi Runas had 80 and is tied for 92nd at 17-over and freshman Amy Simanton carded an 81 and is tied for 99th at 19-over.
The top eight teams - and top two individuals not on an advancing team - qualify for the NCAA Finals later this month in North Carolina. UC Davis is currently tied for 16th with Big West Conference rival UC Irvine with both teams 16 shots behind eighth-place Iowa State.
Seventh-ranked Arizona is at 17-over and has a three-shot lead over top-ranked UCLA. Sixth-ranked Alabama is third, 10 shots behind the Wildcats at 27-over while No. 13 Virginia is fourth at 28-over. California, ranked 24th, No. 20 LSU and No. 32 Texas are all tied for fifth another shot back. Three teams, including host Stanford, are just two shots out of one of the coveted top-eight places.
UC Davis is making its second appearance in the NCAA West Regional after qualifying for the tournament during its inaugural Div. I season in 2007-08. The Aggies grabbed eighth-place in a playoff over Stanford and Ohio State, eventually finishing 21st nationally during that magical season.
Kim was four over on her front nine on Friday, highlighting her first nine holes with two birdies. She added two more on the back to balance two bogeys and five pars, playing the last nine holes at par to come in with a 75.
Stelzmiller was two over after the first seven holes of her round but birdied the par-3 9th to make the turn at just 1-over. She had pars on the next three holes before finishing with three bogeys over her last six to finish her round of 75.
Johnson had two biridies on the back nine, playing it just two over, Runas six pars over her last nine holes and Simanton had three birdies to help in their second-round scores.
Madeleine Ziegert of San Jose State shot a 74 and holds a one-shot lead among individuals at 1-under 141. Megan McChrystal of LSU and Brittany Altomore of Virginia are each tied for second.
UC Davis will tee off the final round on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m. and will play withy UC Irvine and Maryland.
