STANFORD, Calif. -- Junior Chelsea Stelzmiller, making her third career regional appearance, shot a 3-over par 74 on Thursday during the first day of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf West Regional at Stanford and is tied for 26th as 30th-ranked UC Davis ended the round tied for 16th.

UC Davis, playing in the morning wave of teams, fired a 24-over team score of 308 and is tied with No. 35 Arkansas in the 24-team field. The top eight teams in the 54-hole regional - one of three regionals nationwide - advance to the NCAA Finals in North Carolina later this month.

Thirteenth-ranked Virginia and No. 7 Arizona each shot 7-over 291 on Thursday and lead top-ranked UCLA and No. 24 Cal by a stroke. Texas, ranked 32nd, is in fifth, just two shots out of first. Ohio State currently occupies the eighth spot at 12-over.

The Aggies, making their second team appearance at the regional in the past three years, also received a 75 from junior Alice Kim who is tied for 35th. Kim, like Stelzmiller, is also in her third straight regional after playing as an individual last season.

Freshman Demi Runas shot 79 and is tied for 88th, freshman Amy Simanton had an 80 and is tied for 96th, and senior Kimberly Johnson carded an 81 and is tied for 103rd.

Stelzmiller opened her round on the 10th hole at the 6,115-yard Stanford Golf Course with a bogey but gained the stroke back with a birdie on the par-4 13th. She played her front nine even before eventually finishing with a 74.

Kim had a birdie and 12 pars to help her 75 while playing her first nine holes just one over. Runas had 10 pars, Simandon had a pair of birdies and Johnson covered her back nine just three over to help highlight their opening rounds.

Madeleine Ziegert of San Jose State shot a 4-under 67 and owns the individual lead after 18 holes. Cal's Pia Halbig is just one stroke back with three other players are three off the pace.

Fourth-ranked Auburn is on top of the NCAA East Regional after one round while second-ranked Arizona State leads at the Central Regional.

The Aggies will begin their second round at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, teeing off from the first hole. UC Davis will play with Texas and Arkansas during the round. The tournament concludes on Saturday.
