NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Scott Lyman pitched an eight-inning shutout victory while only giving up three hits to Cal State Northridge and Paul Politi and Eric Johnson each hit 4-for-6 as UC Davis took a 16-0 win over the Matadors to win a Big West Conference series in Northridge, Calif. Sunday.
UC Davis is now 19-20 overall and 4-8 in Big West play while Cal State Northridge moves to 22-19 on the year and 4-8 in league action.
Lyman did not give up a run and held Cal State Northridge to only three hits while striking out six in eight innings of work. Lyman now stands at 3-5 overall while Cal State Northridge's Jimmy Jolicoeur now stands at 4-1, picking up his first loss of the season. In 4.1 innings, Jolicoeur gave up six earned runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two.
Kyle Mihaylo continued his hot streak, going 3-for-6 with three runs, four RBI, a three-run home run and a stolen base. The home run was his second of the weekend. Politi hit 4-for-6 with his second home run of the year and four runs to go with one RBI. Johnson hit his first home run of the season as he went 4-for-6 with two RBI and four runs.
UC Davis scored in the first inning, then increased their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the fourth. Johnson singled to left field to start the inning, then advanced to third on a fielder's choice by Mihaylo and a sacrifice bunt by Jason Andrade. Johnson would come around to score after Scott Kalush hit an RBI single to right field. Mihaylo would cross home plate after Batty reached on a fielder's choice with a bunt then Kalush scored the third run of the inning to give UC Davis the four-run advantage.
The Aggies continued their powerful offense with four runs in the fifth inning. After David Popkins grounded out, Politi and Johnson hit back-to-back solo home runs over the left field wall to put two more UC Davis runs on the scoreboard. After a pitching change for Cal State Northridge, Mihaylo doubled down the left field line, then stole third before scoring off an RBI base hit by Andrade. Batty's single to right field later in the inning allowed Andrade to score from second base as UC Davis took an 8-0 lead going into the sixth inning.
UC Davis scored three more runs in the sixth, then took a 13-0 lead into the top of the ninth inning. Mihaylo sealed UC Davis' win with a three-run shot to left field.
For Cal State Northridge, Dominic D'Anna went 2-for-3 while Ryan Pineda was 1-for-3.
UC Davis stays on the road as the Aggies head to Santa Clara Wednesday, May 5 for a 6 p.m. matchup. UC Davis then hosts Pacific for a three-game series beginning Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Dobbins Stadium.
