SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Aggies' Chelsea Stelzmiller shot par-72 to take over first place, Amy Simanton is in second and first-day leader Alice Kim is fourth as UC Davis assumed a 14-shot lead after the second round of the Big West Women's Golf Championship on Monday at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Aggies extended their eight-shot lead after Sunday's first round heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. UC Davis, ranked No. 31 by GolfStat, is looking to win its first-ever Big West title while guaranteeing itself a spot in next month's NCAA Regional.
The Aggies - the only team to break 300 in each of the first two rounds - shot an 11-over 299 on Monday and are at 21-over 597 for the tournament. Defending champion Long Beach State is at 35-over while No. 40 UC Irvine is one shot behind the 49ers.
Stelzmiller, a junior from Placerville, played a steady round with three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars while shooting par-36 on each the front and back nines. All of her birdies came on par-4 holes. Stelzmiller is three over for the championship.
She leads Simanton by one shot after the freshman from Lake Oswego, Ore., carded her second straight round of 74. Simanton was three over after nine holes but played the back nine one shot under par thanks to three birdies on the first five holes after making the turn.
Kim started her second round strong, opening with a birdie on the par-5 first hole and then made her turn even. However, six bogeys over her last seven holes brought her in with a 78. She is still within striking distance of the lead, though, just three shots off the pace at 6-over.
Freshman Demi Runas also had a birdie on her first hole and played both sides of the course two over, carding a 76 to position herself firmly in the top 10 in eighth place at 9-over. Senior Kimberly Johnson moved up into a tie for 11th after her 77, highlighting her day with two birdies over a three-hole span on the front nine's third through fifth holes. She is 11-over overall.
The Aggies are looking for third tournament win of the year and second of the spring. They've only finished lower than fifth in two events this season and are in prime position to earn their second regional berth in just three seasons of Div. I competition.
UC Davis will begins the final round at 8:40 a.m. on Tuesday.
