Medina Quiets Aggie Bats In 12-4 CSUB Win

April 17, 2010

Final Stats

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Sophomore catcher Jeremy Rodriguez rapped out four hits with three RBI while sophomore righty Martin Medina struck out six Aggies in three relief innings, leading Cal State Bakersfield to a 12-4 win over UC Davis in non-conference collegiate baseball action at Hardt Field Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies slip to 16-15 for the season. The 'Runners move to 16-17 overall.

Redshirt freshman third baseman Paul Politi led UC Davis at the plate with three hits, while shortstop Justin Schafer and first baseman Eric Johnson each went 2-for-4 offensively. Senior Kyle Mihaylo delivered the game's only home run, sending a full-count pitch to center to put the Aggies on the board in the second inning.

The Roadrunners posted the bulk of their offensive production in the first three innings, crafting a 7-1 lead. Kevin Younger's RBI single to center highlighted a two-run first, Medina and Jason Kudlock rapped out extra-base hits in the three-run second, then CSUB loaded the bags on the first three batters as part of a two-run third inning.

Mihaylo's solo shot stood as UC Davis' first run, then the Aggie center fielder took part in a small rally in the fourth. He reached on a walk, advanced to third on Politi's RBI bleeder to the right side, then scored on a Scott sacrifice fly. The Aggies' two runs in that frame trimmed the Roadrunner lead to 7-4.

The Aggies reduced the deficit to three when singles by Politi, Seth Batty and Schafer resulted in another run. However, UC Davis never challenged the lead any further, as Medina allowed just one runner in the seventh and eighth innings before fanning the side in the ninth. Meanwhile, Bakersfield padded its advantage in the bottom half of the eighth, scoring five runs -- three on Derek Geisinger's one-out, bases-loaded double.

CSUB got at least one hit from eight of its nine lineup spots, including Rodriguez' four-hit day. Geisinger finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Medina had a triple to go with his relief work on the mound.

Scott Lyman took the loss for the Aggies, allowing nine hits in four innings despite six strikeouts. Roadrunner starter Matt Reyes earned the win, surrendering nine hits and three earned runs in six complete.

UC Davis and Cal State Bakersfield complete their three-game weekend series in a 1 p.m. game at Hardt Field on Sunday.
