UC Davis Third in Commissioner's Cup Standings

April 15, 2010

IRVINE, Calif. - UC Davis has moved into third place in the 2009-10 Big West Conference Commissioner's Cup race after the conclusion of the winter sports season, it was announced by the conference office.

The Commissioner's Cup, which began during the 1998-99 season, is awarded to the most successful program in the nine-institution Big West Conference. Points are awarded to each school participating in a championship with bonus points awarded to a sport's champion. The school with the highest average point total across its sponsored sports is awarded the Commissioner's Cup.

UC Santa Barbara remains in first place with a 136.7 point average and is currently 20 points ahead of the rest of the field. Cal Poly is currently in second place (116.7) with UC Davis close behind in third (115.6). Long Beach State (113.3) and Cal State Fullerton (82.9) round out the top five.

The Aggies' score was bolstered by a regular season championship in women's basketball as well as championship titles in men's and women's swimming and diving.

The 2009-10 season continues to be a success for the Aggies and third place marks UC Davis' highest seasonal finish in the standings since joining the Big West Conference two seasons ago.

UC Davis finished fifth in the final Commissioner's Cup standings last year.
