SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Freshmen Demi Runas and Amy Simanton finished second and fifth, respectively, on Tuesday as the 26th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team narrowly missed winning its second straight tournament, earning runner-up honors to No. 14 Cal at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational hosted by San Jose State.
The Aggies, who beat four top-50 ranked teams, shot a final-round 12-over 300 to conclude the 54-hole tournament at the 6,223-yard Almaden Golf and Country Club at 37-over 901. The Golden Bears jumped from third place to first after firing a 297 on Tuesday for a 35-over total of 899.
San Jose State, ranked 36th, was third at 903, No. 38 UC Irvine was fourth at 916 and No. 22 Oklahoma State took fifth at 917.
Runas, from Torrance, had a career-best finish while posting her second straight top-10 placing. She had four birdies in her last round, including three on the back nine, on her way to a 72. Simanton, who is from Lake Oswego, Ore., also placed in the top 10 for the second straight tournament after tying for second last week at the Fresno State Lexus Classic. She had just one birdie on Tuesday but added 13 pars to card a 3-over 75.
Runas had a three-round 3-over 219 while Simanton was just three shots behind her.
Junior Chelsea Stelzmiller birdied the par-4 fifth hole to get to 1-under, ending the day with a 77 that put her at 13-over 229 and in a tie for 21st in the final standings. Junior Alice Kim had a 76, highlighted by two birdies, and tied for 30th at 15-over 232. Freshman Belen Hernandez tied for 63rd in the 16-team tournament.
Cristina Corpus of San Jose State shot a final-round 74, posting a 1-over 217 to beat Runas by two shots.
The runner-up performance was the Aggies' fourth either first- or second-place finish and continued a season in which they've been no lower than sixth in any of their seven tournaments.
UC Davis will take a break until competing in the Betsy Rawls Invitational at the University of Texas on Mar. 26-28.
