UC Davis Wins Second Tournament Of The Season

March 2, 2010

FRESNO, Calif. - Amy Simanton, Alice Kim and Demi Runas each shot 2-over 74's in Tuesday's final round, each posting top-10 finishes, as the 23rd-ranked UC Davis women's golf team captured its second tournament of the season with a two-shot victory at the Fresno State Lexus Classic.

The Aggies fired a 10-over 288 on Tuesday, ending the tournament at 16-over 880 and winning by two strokes over 37th-ranked San Jose State. The host Bulldogs were a distant third in the 14-team event at 34-over 898.

UC Davis had four players among the top 20 individuals, led by Simanton who matched her tie for second at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational in Hawaii during the fall with another on Tuesday in Fresno. She finished at 1-over for the tournament.

Kim, an honorable mention All-America selection last year, had her third straight top-10 performance and fourth of the season after shooting 1-over 218. Runas had the best finish of her freshman season, tying for ninth at 4-over 220. Junior Chelsea Stelzmiller carded a 76 to finish at 10-over, tying for 18th. Senior Lauren Dobashi tied for 48th.

The title was the second in the past three tournaments for the Aggies who beat several highly ranked teams at the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational in November before topping two more ranked squads at Fresno State.

Simanton had a steady round on Tuesday, finishing with 15 pars, while Kim had a pair of birdies to help spark her 74. Runas had three birdies on the front nine to help her strong finish as well.

Cristina Corpus of San Jose State shot a final-round 71 for a 2-uncer 214, winning by three shots over Simanton and two other players.

UC Davis has not finished lower than sixth-place in any of its six tournaments so far this year. The Aggies will return to action on Monday at the Juli Inkster Invitational at San Jose State.

The Aggies also posted a higher finish than rival Sacramento State which was 10th, earning five points in the race for the 2009-10 Causeway Cup. UC Davis has a 44.17-42.50 lead in the all-sports competition. The winning program needs 50.33 points to secure the title with 13.33 remaining up for grabs.
