UC Davis Awaits WNIT Announcement On Monday

DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis, the Big West Conference regular-season champion which narrowly missed earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament, will continue its season this week when the newly expanded Women's National Invitational Tournament announces its 64-team field on Monday night.

The Aggies, 21-10, received the Big West's guaranteed spot in the tournament by finishing first in the league during the regular season with a 12-4 mark. UC Davis beat UC Santa Barbara in Friday's Big West semifinals but saw its late rally fall just short against UC Riverside in the title game on Saturday.

The WNIT appearance will be the second in just three years of UC Davis' new NCAA Division I era, joining 2008 when the Aggies traveled to face Gonzaga.

Of the 64 teams that will be invited to the tournament - up from the 48 that played last year - a total of 31 earned automatic berths from their conferences while the remaining 33 will be selected as at-large participants.

All tournament games are played on home sites with the first round conducted this Wednesday through Friday. The WNIT Championship is scheduled for Apr. 3.
