FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Amy Simanton's 3-under 69 in Monday's second round put her in a tie for second, Alice Kim is tied for fourth and freshman Demi Runas is tied for 10th as the 23rd-ranked UC Davis women's golf team took the 36-hole lead at the Fresno State Lexus Classic at Copper River Country Club.
The Aggies' strong showing gave it a three-shot lead over No. 37 San Jose State at 6-over 582 after rounds of par and then 294. Fresno State and Santa Clara are tied for third, 15 shots behind UC Davis, while Big West Conference rival UC Irvine is in fifth, 21 shots off the lead.
Simanton, who had three straight birdies and six overall during her second round, is tied with Cristina Corpus of San Jose State at 1-under 143, just two strokes behind defending champion Mike Ueoka of Santa Clara. She had a 74 in her first round.
Simanton led three Aggies in the top 10 and four in the top 17 after 36 holes. Kim, who had five birdies on her way to a 70 in the morning, is also near the lead, just one back of her teammate. Runas had rounds of 72 and 74 and is tied for 10th.
Junior Chelsea Stelzmiller opened with a 72 and is tied for 17th at 6-over while senior Lauren Dobashi is tied for 43rd at 12-over. Stelzmiller had three birdies and 12 pars during her steady first round.
The Aggies, the highest-ranked team in the event, have posted four straight top-five finishes this season and are looking for their second tournament win of the year.
Tuesday's final round begins at 7:30 p.m.
