STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Alice Kim and freshman Demi Runas each shot 6-over 71s in the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational on Saturday, helping the No. 25 UC Davis women's golf team into fifth place after the first round at Stanford Golf Course.
The Aggies finished with a 26-over 310 during the first of the tournament's two rounds, two shots ahead of No. 32 Texas and five back of No. 37 Oregon. Cal, ranked 21st, was the only team to break 300 during tough conditions on the first day, shooting 296. Stanford, ranked 24th and No. 37 Washington are tied for second, eight shots off the pace.
Kim and Runas led the Aggies on the first day with their rounds of 77 and are tied for 15th. Kim had 38 on the front and 39 on the back while Runas finished strong with a 38 on the back nine. Freshmen Amy Simanton and Belen Hernandez each fired 78 and are tied for 21st while Lauren Dobashi had an 80 and is tied for 36th.
Pia Halbig of Cal shot par and has a one-shot lead over Anya Alvarez of Washington. Two ther players are two shots back..
The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
