OPENING TIPS
UC Davis continues to make the turn for home in the regular season, finishing a stretch of three straight road games with a matchup on Thursday against Pacific... The Aggies will play UC Irvine for the second time when the Anteaters visit The Pavilion on Saturday... UC Davis is a half-game behind Cal Poly in the Big West Conference but equal to the Mustangs in the all-important loss column... The Aggies enter the week having won eight of their past nine games and own a conference-best eight road wins... They are guaranteed a road winning record for the regular season... UC Davis continues to lead the Big West in defense and is the only team giving up less than 60.0 ppg. (59.9)... The Aggies are averaging 17.5 turnovers per game, second-best in the league behind Long Beach State (17.2)... Their turnover margin (+4.50) is tops in the league... G Hana Asano (0.96) and P Paige Mintun (0.50) are the only UC Davis players in the black in assist/turnover margin.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. PACIFIC AND UC IRVINE
UC Davis leads the Tigers 10-6 in their all-time series which started during the 1978-79 season, was played four times, and then took a break until resuming in 2004-05.. The Aggies have won seven of the past 10 matchups, including a turnover-plagued 68-59 overtime win on Jan. 23... W Haylee Donaghe had 18 points for the Aggies in that win while G ERICA McKENZIE and F KENDALL RODRIGUEZ each had 13 for the Tigers... The teams combined for 65 turnovers (Pacific, 37; UCD, 28)... The Aggies tied the game late in regulation before holding Pacific off in the extra period... The Aggies hold a commanding 14-1 lead in the all-time series with UC Irvine which began during the 1975-76 season, was played four times and then went on hiatus until the 2004-05 campaign when UC Davis started playing a Big West Conference schedule... It won the first six games in the series with the Anteaters' lone win coming in 2005-06, 79-72 on Hamilton Court... The Aggies have won the last eight games in the series including a 77-44 win on Jan. 14 in Irvine... W Kasey Riecks had three treys and 17 points to pace the Aggies while G REBECCA MAESSEN had 11 for the Anteaters... UC Davis led 40-21 at halftime.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE TIGERS
Pacific enters the game looking to end a 10-game losing streak and for its first win since beating Cal State Northridge on Jan. 2... The Tigers' nine-point loss to the Aggies last month tied a matching margin against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 9 as their closest defeats during that span... Pacific owns lofty rankings in the Big West for blocked shots (3rd, 3.7), steals (2nd, 10.4) and turnover margin (+0.95)... F CHRISTINA THOMPSON (11.7) is ranked 14th in the Big West in scoring while F EMMA HEAD (6.1) is seventh in rebounding... Head also leads the league in offensive rebounds (3.1) and is fourth in blocks (1.2)... Pacific is being outscored (72.1-60.0) and outrebounded (42.9-35.1) but has made 131 three-pointers, 20 more than its opponents... G ERICA McKENZIE has 32 while KENDALL RODRIGUEZ has 25 and G JASMINE DANA 24.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE ANTEATERS
UC Irvine has been playing well as of late, having won four of their past seven games including four of their last six Big West contests... That's put the Anteaters in seventh in the league, but just a game out of fourth and within striking distance of the leaders... While being outrebounded for all games entering the week, they are doing a solid job in Big West games, outboarding opponents 39.4-35.5 pg... A big part of that has been F MIKAH MALY-KARROS who began the week been averaging 12.2 rpg during league games, best in the Big West by nearly three per game... Her 18.5 ppg scoring average during conference trailed only KRISTINA SANTIAGO of Cal Poly... She's coming off a monster game against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday when she scored 14 points and had 17 rebounds... Maly-Karros also had four blocks... G JADE SMITH-WILLIAMS (12.7) and G REBECCA MAESSEN (10.7) have also been scoring well for UC Irvine which was averaging 61.5 ppg at the start of play this week... They were shooting just 27.0% from beyond the arc with SMITH-WILLIAMS leading the way with 31 treys.
LAST GAME: UC DAVIS 62, UC SANTA BARBARA 54
P Paige Mintun scored 17 points, W Heidi Heintz had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and UC Davis played strong down the stretch after host UC Santa Barbara rallied from an early 15-point deficit as the Aggies beat the Gauchos at The Thunderdome on Saturday afternoon... The Aggies had a great start against UCSB, scoring the game's first five points and then eventually leading 17-2 with less than 10 minutes gone... But the Gauchos rallied to within 25-23 at halftime and eventually tied the game 43-43 with 8 minutes, 38 seconds left on a three-pointer from G EMILIE JOHNSON... But a layup from Heintz and a three-pointer from G Hana Asano pushed the lead back to five... UCSB twice cut it back down to two points but a key 8-0 run, capped by a three-point play from Heintz with 1:57 to go made it 58-49... The Aggies missed four straight free throws in the final minute but the Gauchos weren't able to capitalize, committing five turnovers.
HEINTZ CLEARS DOUBLE-DOUBLE
W Heidi Heintz picked up her first double-double as an Aggie, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds at UC Santa Barbara last Saturday... It was UC Davis' first double-double of the season and the team's first since P Paige Mintun had 13 points and 12 rebounds against Cal State Northridge in the Big West Tournament last year.
MINTUN TIES CAREER HIGH FROM LONG DISTANCE
P Paige Mintun is certainly adept around the basket but her ability to shoot from the outside has helped make her that much more effective... Mintun had a trio of three-pointers at UCSB on Saturday, tying a career-high she last achieved at Long Beach State last year... She's made 18 three-pointers this year, third-best on the team.
REBOUNDING STILL A CHALLENGE FOR AGGIES
UC Davis has been outrebounded in 18 of 22 games this year yet has posted an 11-7 in those games... Included is a 46-19 differential against UC Santa Barbara at The Pavilion in January, yet it was a game the Aggies won 54-49... They currently rank ninth in the Big West in rebounds (31.3 pg) and are eighth in rebounding margin (-6.4), ahead only of Pacific (-7.7).
SHOOTING IT FROM DOWNTOWN
The Aggies are averaging 6.4 three-pointers per game and if they can continue the pace, will nearly set a school record for most made in a season... The 2006-07 squad made 189 with this year's team currently at 140 with seven regular-season games to go... At their current rate, UC Davis will head to the postseason with a school-record 184... It needs to average a shade over seven per game to break the mark... It helps that six players have made at least 11, including W Kasey Riecks (37) and W Cortney French (28)... UC Davis is ranked second in the Big West for three-pointers per game.
TOP 10 UPDATES
W Haylee Donaghe has 199 career steals, moving her to seventh on the program's career leaders list, just two behind G Jackie Turpin (201, 2002-06)... Donaghe's nine steals against Pacific tied her career-high which are also No. 3 at UC Davis... P Paige Mintun's 80 career blocks have put her into the No. 6 all-time Aggie position on that chart, tying her with former teammate P Ellen Porshneva (80, 2003-06).
UC DAVIS SIGNS TWO
The Aggies announced in November the signing of BRIANNA SALVATORE and KELSEY BEARD to NCAA National Letters of Intent... Salvatore is a three-time All-Century League selection at Villa Park High School while Beard earned first-team All-Big VIII League honors at Centennial High School last year... Salvatore is a 5-foot-10 forward while Beard is a 6-3 center.
DONAGHE GETS EXTRA YEAR
W Haylee Donaghe, from Atascadero High School, was granted a clock extension in October 2008 by the NCAA due to injuries earlier in her Aggie career... That gave her two years of eligibility at the time but, unfortunately, a knee injury suffered at South Dakota State in December 2008 cut short one of those seasons... Donaghe completed her undergraduate degree in exercise biology in June 2008 and is currently enrolled in graduate studies at UC Davis, expecting to graduate with her master's degree in exercise biology next spring... Donaghe needs 127 points to become the 14th player in school history to surpass 1,000 for her career.
HEINTZ NAMED BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
W Heidi Heintz, who averaged 13.3 points and was nearly perfect from the line during UC Davis' first three wins in early December, was named the Big West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Dec. 7... Heintz had a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds in UC Davis' 71-59 win at Saint Mary's on Dec. 1, followed with 12 points and a game-best seven boards in the Aggies' 74-56 victory at Santa Clara on Dec. 3, then scored 13 points during a 64-57 win over visiting Denver on Dec. 5... Heintz, who transferred to UC Davis from the University of San Francisco, shot 57.1 percent from the field and 93.8 percent (15 of 16) from the line... She is the Aggies' first Big West weekly honoree of the season.
SIMPSON BECOMES ALL-TIME WINS LEADER
With a 53-50 win at Cal State Northridge last Mar. 4, Head coach Sandy Simpson became the all-times win leader at UC Davis with 206... He owns a career mark in 13 seasons of 221-140 (.612)... He picked up his 200th career win on Jan. 4 with an 86-66 victory over visiting Cal State Northridge... Simpson surpassed former coach JORJA HOEHN (1988-95, 96-97) who amassed a 205-51 (.801) record during her impressive tenure... Simpson served as an assistant coach under Hoehn as well as mentor PAM GILL-FISHER (1975-79, 81-86, 87-88) who posted 164 career victories.
UC DAVIS SCORES BIG ON ALL-BIG WEST TEAMS
The Aggies were well-represented on the All-Big West Conference teams last year, despite finishing 7-9 in league and in fifth place... P Paige Mintun, who led the team in scoring (13.0 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg) and blocks (31), was named to the All-BWC first team... W Lauren Juric, who canned 35 three-pointers, was named the Big West Freshman of the Year... W Kasey Riecks, who started all 29 games, was selected to the All-Freshman team... She and Juric were also tabbed honorable mention all-league.
