Complete Big West Conference Release
IRVINE, CA - The UC Davis women's soccer and women's cross country teams were named the winners of the Big West Conference Fall Sportsmanship Team Award, it was announced Thursday by Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell.
The Sportsmanship Award is voted upon by the respective student-athletes in each of the Big West's 16 championship sports.
"Sportsmanship is viewed with the utmost of importance by the Big West Conference, and our student-athletes should be honored to receive this award," said Farrell. "Exemplifying the ideals of conduct in competition and being acknowledged by your peers for doing so is something that the Cal State Northridge, UC Davis and UC Riverside programs should accept with a sense of pride."
Women's soccer concluded the 2010 campaign with an overall record of 7-9-2 and a 2-5-1 mark in conference action and saw Aisha Lott earn All-Big West Conference first team honors. Lisa Kemp was named to the second team.
The Aggie women's cross country team placed fifth overall at the 2010 Big West Conference Cross Country Championships and were led by Krista Drechsler's 14th-place finish. Drechsler finished the 6K race in a time of 21:13.4 while Cailtin Fitzgerald was 17th in a time of 21:20.0.
UC Riverside claimed the award in the sports of women's volleyball and men's soccer, while the Cal State Northridge men's cross country squad rounded out the list of honorees for the conference's five fall sports.
Winning teams are honored with commemorative tee shirts.
