Dec. 13, 2010

Game Notes | Listen

WICHITA, Kan. - UC Davis concludes its two-game trip to the state of Kansas on Tuesday evening when the Aggies look to get back on the winning track with their first-ever meeting against Wichita State, scheduled for 5 p.m. (Pacific) at Koch Arena.

UC Davis is 6-2 overall after dropping a 61-41 nonconference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Kansas State while the Shockers have been idle since beating Savannah State 67-41 last Friday, improving to 5-3.

Tuesday's game can be heard on KDVS (90.3 FM) or on www.ucdavisaggies.com.

The game is the Aggies' fifth against a team from the Missouri Valley Conference. UC Davis lost against Creighton each of the past two seasons and went 0-2 against Bradley and Drake in late 2007.

UC Davis is coming off a tough loss at Kansas State in which the Wildcats jumped to a 20-3 lead just seven minutes into the game and never let the Aggies get the deficit into single digits the rest of the way. UC Davis was held to just 26.8 percent from the floor, 21.1 percent from three-point and 46.7 percent from the line.

Kansas State improved to 8-1 with the win and continues to receive votes in the Associated Press Top 25. The Aggies entered last week ranked No. 8 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll with the new rankings expected on Tuesday afternoon.

Vicky Deely scored 12 points for UC Davis, canning a trio of three-pointers. The sophomore is enjoying a breakout season, jumping three spots in the latest NCAA Div. I stat rankings. Deely has made 52.5 percent of her long-distance tries, has a team-high 21 for the year and trails only Zhaque Gray of Penn State (52.6).

Wichita State will be playing the 1,000th game in program history on Tuesday night, looking to post back-to-back wins for the first time since winning three straight in late November.

The Shockers, who own a 67-58 victory over Big West member Cal State Northridge, are led in scoring by Haleigh Lankster who's averaging 12.9 ppg. and making nearly 51 percent of her shots. Michelle Price paces the teams with 5.6 rpg. while Morgan Boyd has a team-best 11 three-pointers.

Wichita State is outscoring its opponents 64.5-57.6 ppg and is holding them to just 37 percent shooting from the floor. Guard Breanna Dawkins, Boyd and Price each scored 10 points in last Friday's win over Savannah State while Dawkins led the way with seven rebounds.

The Shockers led 34-22 at halftime and outsored Savannah State 33-19 in the second half, matching an early season win at SIU-Edwardsville with the 26-point margin of victory.

Deely's scoring on Sunday pushed her season average to a team-best 12.3 ppg., just ahead of senior Paige Mintun (12.1). Deely (5.6) and Mintun (5.0) are 1-2 in rebounding for UC Davis which is also holding opponents to just 55.9 ppg.

The Aggies are also averaging 13.6 steals per game, 13th nationally, and are 32nd among Div. I teams with 7.3 three-pointers per game.

UC Davis will continue a season-long four-game roadtrip on Sunday when it travels across the causeway to face local rival Sacramento State. The Aggies will hit the road on Dec. 21 for a nonconference game against San Jose State.
