Hawaii To Join Big West Conference In 2012

IRVINE, Calif. - The Big West Conference Board of Directors today announced the addition of the University of Hawaii, Manoa as a member of the Conference effective July 1, 2012. Hawaii becomes the tenth Conference member institution.

Dr. Michael Drake, Chancellor, University of California, Irvine and Chair of the Big West Board of Directors made the announcement. "We are excited and pleased with the addition of Hawaii to the Big West Conference. In assessing Hawaii, the Board carefully considered and was impressed by both its legacy of athletic success and its commitment to academic excellence."

Hawaii's women's program was a member of the Big West Conference from 1984 to 1996 before joining its men's program in the Western Athletic Conference. Beginning in 2012-13 Hawaii will participate in the following Big West championship sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, women's cross country, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, women's track and field, women's volleyball and women's water polo.

The Big West Conference is a member of NCAA Division I and includes California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State University, Fullerton; California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Northridge; University of California, Davis; University of California, Irvine; University of California, Riverside; University of California, Santa Barbara; and the University of the Pacific.
