DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis football player Brandon Tucker and cross country runner Kristina Taylor have organized the second-annual Art of Athletes, an art show featuring exhibits by various Aggie student-athletes. The event takes place in the UC Davis art department's Basement Gallery from Friday through Tuesday, November 19-23.
Friday's portion, open from 4:30 to 7 p.m., includes an opportunity to meet the artists and discuss their work. The student-athletes will be in attendance from 5:30 until closing on that night. There is no admission for the event.
This year's show consists of artwork from 11 contributors: Bianca Castillo (softball), Jenah Dawson (swimming), Morgan Flaharty (wrestling), Kayleigh Foley (swimming), Anna Harp (basketball), Winsome Hitchcock (volleyball), Amanda Marinac (field hockey), Hannah Stephens (basketball), Elaine Tanski (soccer), plus Tucker and Taylor.
The Basement Gallery is a student-run gallery featuring works by UC Davis art studio majors. Nearly half of the student-athletes who submitted artwork to this year's show are enrolled in that major.
Although The Art of Athletes launched in October of 2009 as part of the Homecoming Weekend, the idea for the show dates back to the previous spring when several student-athletes displayed artwork at the Aggie Idol talent show, a charity event run by the UC Davis Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Tucker, a running back for the football team and an art studio major, took the lead in organizing the inaugural show held at the Log Cabin Gallery in downtown Davis. Art professor Mike Henderson was credited with inspiring Tucker with the idea of an art show.
