DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis intercollegiate athletics department has announced the launch of a Student-Athlete Legacy Award to honor former Aggie student-athletes for accomplishments subsequent to their collegiate careers. Furthermore, the department has revised slightly the nomination procedure for the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, the deadline for which is November 30.
The new Legacy Award, proposed by the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame (CAAHOF) Advisory Board, was officially approved by Fred Wood, vice chancellor for Student Affairs.
The official purpose of the Legacy Award is to "provide special recognition of a former UC Davis student-athlete who has attained outstanding postcollegiate achievement(s) and/or distinction(s), preferably on a national or international level, that brings honor and prestige to the University of California, Davis." The new award differs from the Hall of Fame, inaugurated in 1980, which honors former Aggies for achievement during their collegiate careers.
"UC Davis has always sought to enable its student-athletes to fulfill their potential, to set and achieve goals, and to excel in all aspects of their lives," said Greg Warzecka, director of athletics. "While our Hall of Fame honors past student-athletes for what they accomplished during their time at UC Davis, the new Legacy award will enable us to showcase what they have achieved since - that is, their contributions to their professions, to their communities and to the university's name and reputation."
The Legacy Award recipient will be honored at the department's annual awards banquet in June. This event also includes the presentations of the student-athlete awards and the Special Recognition Award, plus the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame inductions.
Additionally, the CAAHOF Advisory Board revised and clarified the nomination process for all three of its awards programs: the Hall of Fame, the Special Recognition Award (for volunteer contributions) and the Legacy Award. Effective immediately, nominations for any of these awards are valid for a two-year span. If a candidate is not selected for his/her award in the initial year submitted, that candidate will be automatically entered into the nomination pool for the second year. If the candidate is not selected in that second year, he/she must be resubmitted in order to continue earning consideration for the award. The two-year process then repeats.
The deadline to submit a candidate for the 2010-11 Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, Special Recognition Award or Student-Athlete Legacy Award is Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Online forms are available at the UC Davis athletics website, www.ucdavisaggies.com.
