Simanton Fires 71 During Final Round At Washington

LAKEWOOD, Calif. -- Sophomore Amy Simanton blistered the front nine at Tacoma Country & Golf Club for a 5-under 30 on Wednesday, eventually shooting a 1-under 71 to tie for 16th overall and leading the 18th-ranked UC Davis women's golf team to a seventh-place finish at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.

The Aggies had their best round of the three-day tournament, carding a collecting 8-over 296 and ending the 54-hole event a 32-over 896. Simanton moved into the top 20, finishing at 5-over 221. Sophomore Demi Runas shot 79 and tied for 24th at 9-over 225, Alice Kim posted a 76 and tied for 29th at 10-over, Jessica Chulya was 43rd at 14-over, and Chelsea Stelzmiller tied for 48th at 17-over.

Fifth-ranked Cal fired an 8-under 280 on Wednesday for a two-shot tournament win, holding off charging second-ranked USC which finished at 13-under for the day. The Golden Bears posted a 17-under 847 while USC was at 849. Host Washington was far back in third (877) while No. 43 Stanford (894) and No. 40 Pepperdine (894) tied for fourth.

The Aggies, whose final around was two shots better than their previous-best score this week, were just one stroke behind No. 14 Oregon (895) which placed sixth. Cal's Emily Childs claimed medalist honors at 10-under 206 after carding a 70 on Wednesday.

Simanton got off to a hot start during the final round, shooting five birdies on the front nine, including a pair of par-3 holes. She had another birdie on the back but also had three bogeys and a double-bogey, still coming in with an impressive 71.

Stelzmiller finished the tournament strong, playing the front nine three over but stringing together eight pars and a birdie on the back for a 74, her best score of the week. Chulya had two birdies in her round of 75, Kim had one during her 76 and Runas played her front nine just two over.

The tournament brings to a close a busy month-long stretch for the Aggies who played four tournaments in Japan, New Mexico, Colorado and Washington. They'll now break for the rest of the fall, returning to action in February at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
