LAKEWOOD, Wash. - Senior Alice Kim and sophomore Demi Runas each shot opening-round par-72's on Monday at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club and are tied for seventh, leading the 18th-ranked UC Davis into fourth place at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational being hosted by the University of Washington.
The Aggies posted a 10-over team score of 298 and trail third-place Washington by five shots. Behind 4-under 68's from Emily Childs and Joanne Lee, the fifth-ranked California Golden Bears lead No. 2 USC by a shot after finishing Monday with a 4-under 284.
Childs and Lee lead the tournament along with the Trojans' Sophia Popov.
Kim, a 2009 All-America honorable mention, had three birdies in her round, countering a bogey and double-bogey. She finished the round strong, postings six pars and birdie over her final seven holes. Runas, named the Big West Golfer of the Month for September after a trio of top-10 placings, picked up where she left off, carding three birdies and three pars on her way to a 72 as well.
Simanton was one under early in her day after a birdie on the par-4, 2nd and made the turn just one over. Three bogeys and six pars on the back nine brought her in with a 77. Chulya, making her Aggie debut, was three over after three holes but had 12 pars the remainder of the day while carding a 78. Stelzmiller was just three over after nine holes before posting an 82 overall.
UC Davis is ahead of all teams ranked below it and will look to make a move on Tuesday morning beginning at 9:45 a.m. The 15-team tournament - Washington also has a "B" squad entered - concludes with the final round on Wednesday.
