DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's basketball team will play before a national television audience this Friday when it takes on UC Santa Barbara on ESPNU. The Big West Conference clash begins at 8 p.m. at The Thunderdome in Santa Barbara. It can also be heard on KFSG 1690-AM as well as www.ucdavisaggies.com.
UC Davis will look to maintain the top spot in the Big West as well as extend its current three-game winning streak. The Aggies are 6-8 overall and a perfect 2-0 at the top of the Big West standings. The squad posted a two-game home sweep of the past two conference champions with wins against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday and Cal State Northridge on Monday.
Dominic Calegari is coming off a career-night in the Aggies' 85-73 win over CSUN. The senior posted career highs in points (28), rebounds (11) and steals (4) while moving closer to 1,000 career points. He currently stands at 963 and needs just 37 points to become the 16th Aggie to reach the career milestone.
Overall, Calegari is averaging 24.0 points in Big West games and is second on the team with 16.0 ppg. He currently ranks sixth in the conference in scoring in all games. Teammate Mark Payne, who did not play in the Cal State Northridge game, remains the overall scoring leader in the Big West with 17.2 ppg. Joe Harden is 10th with 14.0 ppg. and ranks third with 8.1 rebounds per game.
UC Santa Barbara enters the game 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big West. The Gauchos are coming off a 57-53 victory at UC Riverside on Monday night in a game they trailed by nine points at the half. UCSB dropped its Big West opener on Saturady at UC Irvine, 57-55. The Gauchos started the season 4-0 and have posted a 2-6 mark since. Sophomore guard Orlando Johnson leads UCSB with 16.8 ppg and 5.9 rpg. Sophomore forward James Nunnally is adding 12.3 ppg.
UC Santa Barbara leads the all-time series, 14-4. The home team won each of the two games last year. UCSB is 3-1 against the Aggies since UC Davis became an official Big West member in 2007-08.
Friday's game is the first of two on the Aggies' road trip, which concludes Sunday afternoon at Cal Poly.
