Long Beach State Tops UC Davis, 80-58

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State defeated UC Davis, 80-58, in a Big West Conference men's basketball game Saturday at the Walter Pyramid. Mark Payne and Dominic Calegari each led UC Davis 8-12, 4-4 Big West) with 16 points. Eugene Phelps led the 49ers with 21 points, and T.J. Robinson added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Long Beach State (10-11, 4-4 Big West) used a 26-8 run in the first half to take early control and added another 14-1 run to start the second half.

The first 6:35 of the game featured eight lead changes, but the next 12 minutes belonged to Long Beach State. Trailing 13-12, the 49ers outscored the Aggies 26-8. The first part of the stretch was an 8-0 blitz, and it was capped off by a 7-0 run in a span of 40 seconds to give LBSU a 38-20 cushion at the 4:20 mark.

The rest of the half was all UC Davis as the Aggies closed the period on a 12-2 run. Calegari scored five points during the closing stretch, including a three-pointer. The Aggies held the 49ers without a field goal in the final 4:46 of the half to go to the break trailing 40-32.

Long Beach State took back control of the game with a 14-1 run to start the second half. By the time it was over, the 49ers led 54-33 with 15:05 left. UC Davis countered with an 8-0 run to get within 13 of the lead. Calegari scored four during the run, which cut the lead to 54-41 at the 12:48 mark. That Aggies would get as close as 56-44 before the 49ers pulled away with a 22-10 surge to lead 76-54 with 4:20 remaining.

LBSU shot 51 percent and held UC Davis to just under 38 percent. The 49ers held a 38-29 edge in rebounding.

Joe Harden, Todd Lowenthal and Adam Malik added six points for UC Davis. Lowenthal led the Aggies with eight rebounds, and Calegari added seven.

UC Davis returns home to open a three-game homestand Thursday night against Cal Poly.
