ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Freshman Belen Hernandez shot an impressive 4-under 69 in Sunday's final round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico as the Aggies finished their season-opener in sixth place.
Junior Alice Kim led the Aggies in the individual standings, shooting 75 on Sunday to tie for 15th at 1-over 220. Junior Chelsea Stelzmiller - who had a solid round of 73 - tied for 17th at 2-over 221 along with Hernandez.
Freshman Amy Simanton enjoyed her best round of the two-day event, carding an even-par 73 to tie for 35th at 7-over while senior Kimberly Johnson shot 76 to tie for 62nd at 12-over.
The 18-team tournament was played at the 6,178-yard UNM Championship Course.
UC Davis improved its team score for the second consecutive round, shooting a 2-under 290 - the third-lowest tally of the day - to conclude the tournament at 11-over 867. Pepperdine fired a three-round total of 17-under 859 to win by seven strokes over host New Mexico. UNLV and TCU tied for third at 7-over while Oregon took fifth at 9-over, just two shots in front of UC Davis.
Kendra Little of Oregon shot her second straight round of 68 for a final total of 12-under 207. She beat Jodi Ewart of New Mexico for medalist honors by one stroke.
Thanks to three birdies and just one bogey, Hernandez raced to two shots under par after 11 holes before an eagle on the par-5, 475-yard first hole pushed her to 4-under. She balanced her books the rest of the way to post her 69, a team-best for the tournament.
Stelzmiller had four birdies while Simanton had three during their rounds of 73 while Kim had 14 pars to help her 75. Johnson picked up her lone birdie on the par-5 5th.
UC Davis will stay on the road, traveling to the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the University of Denver. The 13-team tournament will be held Monday through Wednesday.
