TEMPE, Ariz. - UC Davis sophomore Alice Kim used a hot start to get to four shots under par before finishing with a 1-under 71 on Friday, rallying into a tie for 19th after two rounds of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf West Regional at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course.
Sophomore Chelsea Stelzmiller, who like Kim is playing in the regional tournament as an individual, had a second-round 76 and is tied for 53rd after 36 holes. Kim is at 1-over 145 while Stelzmiller is at 6-over 150.
Both players are trying to qualify for the national finals later this month at Georgetown University. The top two players not on one of the eight advancing teams will move on from the regional. There are currently three players ahead of Kim who are on teams that are in ninth place or below.
She put herself in position to advance in the national championship with a strong round on Friday. Kim had two birdies on the front nine, the first on the par-3 4th and the second on the par-3 7th, to get two shots below par. She then birdied her first two holes on the back nine including the 504-yard, par-5 10th to get four shots in the red.
However, three bogeys over her final five holes brought her back closer to par but still helped her climb the leaderboard after opening the day in a tie for 44th.
Stelzmiller, who joined Kim on the All-Big West Conference first team this season, had two birdies and 11 pars during her round. She had her first birdie on the par-4 3rd hole, which helped counter an early double-bogey, and then her second on the 488-yard, par-5 14th.
A bogey on the 16th pushed her back to 4-over which is where she finished.
Carlota Ciganda of Arizona State shot a 68 on Friday for a two-round total of 135. She has a one shot lead over two players.
Host Arizona State continues to enjoy a commanding lead in the team standings. The top-ranked Sun Devils are at 20-under and lead No. 4 USC by 16 shots. Big West Conference member UC Irvine is a shot back of the Trojans in third. The top eight teams will advance to the national finals.
Kim and Stelzmiller will tee off Saturday's final round at 7 a.m.
