TEMPE, Ariz. -- -UC Davis sophomores Alice Kim and Chelsea Stelzmiller each shot 2-over 74's on Thursday morning during the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf West Regional at Arizona State and are each tied for 44th in the 108-player field.
The Aggie pair are competing as individuals at the regional which is comprised of 21 teams and three individuals. The top eight teams and the top two individuals not on an advancing teams will qualify for the NCAA Finals at Georgetown University later this month.
Kim, ranked 79th by Golfstat, and Stelzmiller, ranked 103rd, are participating in their second straight NCAA Championship event after helping lead UC Davis to a 21st-place finish last year.
Both opened the 54-hole tournament at the 6,168-yard Karsten Golf Course on Thursday with 74's. Kim started strong, posting a birdie on her first hole, the par-5, 510-yard 10th, and then got to 2-under after five holes. However, a pair of double-bogey's put her at 2-over before a pair of birdies and two bogeys kept her there the rest of the day.
Stelzmiller was three shots over par after seven holes but started her back nine with a birdie at No. 1 - and after bogeying the second hole - got back to 2-over with a birdie at the par-3 No. 6. She had 13 pars during her first round.
Belen Mozo of Southern California had a 6-under 66 during the first round to take an early one-shot lead. Jane Chin of UC Irvine and Carlota Ciganda of Arizona State each had 65's during early play and are just a stroke back.
Host Arizona State shot a 15-under 273 on its home course and leads by 15 strokes over three teams.
Kim and Stelzmiller will tee off Friday's second round at 11:20 a.m.
