Big West Championship results
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Sophomore Chelsea Stelzmiller shot a final-round 75 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for second as the UC Davis women's golf team nearly captured its first Big West Conference Championship by tying for runner-up honors just a shot back of No. 49 Long Beach State at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
The Aggies, who were two back of the 49ers heading into Tuesday's final round at the par-72, 6,168-yard course, tied defending champion No. 24 UC Irvine at 66-over 930. UC Davis shot a final-round 19-over 307, Long Beach State had a 308 and UC Irvine rallied with a 303.
The 49ers secured the Big West Conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Championships which begins with regional competition in May.
Stelzmiller, last year's Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, had her best round of the two-day tournament, finishing the 54-hole championship at 12-over 228. She tied Patty Chawalitmetha and third-ranked Jane Chin of UC Irvine, and Lee Lopez of Long Beach State for second place behind winner Stephanie Yocum of Cal Poly who shot 72 on Tuesday and finished at 9-over.
UC Davis sophomore Alice Kim, who was in a three-way tie for the 36-hole lead, finished sixth at 13-over 229 after shooting 79 in the last round. Teammate Lauren Dobashi posted a 77 and took 11th at 20-over, Bryana Gregory tied for 12th at 21-over after carding her best round with a 76, and Brittany Smith tied for 23rd at 29-over, shooting an 80 on Tuesday.
