Gauchos Slug Their Way To Series Victory Over Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. - John DeAlba and Mark Haddow each drove in three runs on two hits and UC Santa Barbara scored multiple runs in four innings to defeat UC Davis 14-1 during a Big West Conference baseball series at Dobbins Stadium Friday afternoon. The win gives the Gauchos the series victory over the Aggies.

UC Davis drops to 5-23 overall and 0-5 in conference while UCSB improves its record to 19-9 and 5-3. The Gauchos won yesterday's game to win their second straight conference series.

DeAlba entered the game as a pinch hitter Mark Haddow both finished with two hits and three RBIs and scored a run. Gunnar Terhune finished 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs. Steve Cook also drove home two runs for the Gauchos.

For the Aggies, junior Kyle Mihaylo singled in the lone run and was the only Aggie with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4.

Mario Hollands pitched the first 3.1 innings of the ballgame and did not allow a run on four hits in the victory. He was hit by a batted ball with one out in the fourth inning and left the game. Clayton Edwards and Patrick McIntyre finished the game and allowed only one run on two hits while striking out four.

Redshirt freshman Nathan Slater made his second start for UC Davis in the loss. He retired 10 straight batters after giving up two runs in the first inning but was relieved in the fourth. The Gauchos scored four unearned runs after his departure. Junior Matthew Lewis pitched the ninth inning and struck out two batters.

The Gauchos opened with two runs in the first inning. The Aggies held them scoreless through the next two innings. UCSB then padded the lead with four runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth and another in the sixth. All four runs in the fourth inning were unearned. Haddow and Terhune both had two-run hits in the inning.

The Aggies broke through with their lone run in the sixth inning. Mihaylo hit a two-out single up the middle to bring home sophomore Justin Schafer from third base.

UCSB added four more runs in the seventh inning to improve its lead to 14-1. DeAlba hit a two-run double and Cook added a two-run pinch-hit single.
