Sophomore Chelsea Stelzmiller fired a 1-over 72 on Monday at the Anteater Invitational being hosted by UC Irvine at Dove Canyon Country Club as the UC Davis women's golf team ended the first round in fourth place, just three shots out of first.

UC Davis had all four of its scoring players on Monday among the top 25 places, a quartet that includes sophomore Alice Kim tied for ninth, junior Lauren Dobashi tied for 19th and senior Jessica Yam tied for 25th.

The Aggies had a 20-over 304 team score and are among five teams separated by just five strokes atop the leaderboard. San Francisco shot a 301 and leads Long Beach State - one of six Big West Conference teams in the event - by a stroke. Idaho is third at 303 followed by UC Davis and UC Riverside (305).

The par-71, 5,924-yard course played tough in the first round with all 74 players shooting above par. Stelzmiller, from Union Mine High School in El Dorado, and UC Riverside's Jennifer Bermingham each threatened to finish the day at par or better but just missed after firing matching rounds of 72. They hold a one-shot lead over four players and a two-shot advantage over two others.

Stelzmiller has a pair of top-seven finishes among her last three starts - she has four top-10 showings for the year - and entered the tournament with a 73.5 scoring average.

Kim, who leads the team with a 72.8 average and also has four top-10 finishes this season, is tied for ninth with two players after shooting 75. Dobashi, who took second at the Sacramento State Invitational last week, is in a group of six players tied with 78's.

Yam carded a 79 and is tied for 25th with Stephanie Johns of Portland State while Katie Sisler shot 89 and is in 68th.

More than half the field shot at least 80 during the difficult first day of play. UC Davis had 12 birdies during the first round, tying San Francisco for the most. Stelzmiller and Dobashi each had 11 pars, tied for the third-highest total among players.

Fourteen teams are entered in the three-day tournament which will continue with shotgun rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday.
