LA QUINTA, Calif. - UC Davis sophomore Alice Kim shot 2-over 74 on Friday on the Stadium Course at PGA West, tying for third overall and finishing in front of eight players ranked nationally among the top 50 as the Aggie women's golf team teed it up against three top programs at the California Cup.
Team scores weren't kept during the one-day event which was won by Tiffany Joh from UCLA and Pia Halbig from Cal who each shot 73.
Playing a championship-level course, Chelsea Stelzmiller shot 80 and tied for 17th, Katie Sisler and Jessica Yam each had 82 and tied for 20th, and Lauren Dobashi carded an 84 and was 24th. Kim enjoyed a strong round for 15 holes, going 2-under before finishing just above par.
Besides UC Davis, the tournament was also comprised of players from top-ranked UCLA, No. 17 Cal and No. 23 Stanford. The Aggies entered the week ranked 61st nationally. First-year head coach Anne Walker said the experience of playing a tough course against top competition will pay dividends to her own talented squad which is trying to earn a spot in the NCAA West Regionals for the second straight year.
"This is the competition level we'll hopefully be able to see at regionals," she said. "The course was a championship course you see in the postseason."
UC Davis, which began its spring break week at the Oregon Duck Invitational on Monday and Tuesday, will travel to the Anteater Invitational at UC Irvine this coming Monday and Tuesday.
