DAVIS, Calif. - San Francisco scored three runs in the second inning off three doubles and held UC Davis to just one run on three hits in a 7-1 victory during a non-conference baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Tuesday afternoon. It was the home opener for UC Davis, who falls to 1-3. The Dons improve to 2-3.
Zach Kim led the Dons with two doubles, three hits and an RBI. He was part of a trio of San Francisco players that drove in runs in the second inning off doubles. Derek Poppert had a game-high two RBIs in the contest while Cameron Love pitched the first two scoreless innings to pick up his first win of the season.
The lone UC Davis run came off a home run from junior Kyle Mihaylo in the fifth inning. Junior Jared Thompson doubled and freshman Scott Kalush singled to account for the other two Aggie hits.
Mihaylo's solo homer cut the Dons' lead to 4-1, but San Francisco answered with another run in the sixth and two runs in the ninth..
Freshman Tyler Bremer made his first start for the Aggies and pitched four innings with three strikeouts in the loss. Junior transfer Scott Heinig totaled a game-high four strikeouts in two innings of work for UC Davis. The Aggies used a total of seven pitchers in the game while the Dons threw six.
San Francisco got a one-out single in the second and then scored runs on back-to-back doubles from Drew Johnson and Dane Braunecker. Following a strikeout, Kim doubled to bring home Braunecker.
The Dons jumped to a 4-0 lead with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Following Mihaylo's solo shot, San Francisco scored off a wild pitch in the sixth to go ahead 5-1. Poppert singled home two runs in the ninth inning to make the final score 7-1.
UC Davis returns home to host a three-game series with No. 17 Pepperdine over the weekend. The first game is set for Friday at 2:30 p.m.
