Feb. 20, 2009

Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Blair Dunlap went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs; Rob Rasmussen allowed one hit in five innings and 12th-ranked UCLA used a seven-run fourth to take a 13-1 victory over UC Davis during the season-opening game in front of 784 fans at Jackie Robinson Field Friday night.

On the opening night of college baseball, UCLA put up two-run innings in the third, sixth and seventh along with the huge seven-run fourth. Dunlap, Niko Gallego, Chris Giovainazzo, Gabe Cohen and Chris Amezquita each drove in a game-high two RBIs to help lead the Bruins, who totaled 11 hits.

Rasmussen surrendered only two hits in the five innings and struck out five to earn the victory. Garrett Claypool and Matt Grace combined to allow only four hits and one run during the final three innings.

Competing in his first collegiate game, freshman Joseph Medeiros drove in the Aggies' only run in the ninth inning with a double to left field. Redshirt freshman Eric Johnson, also competing in his first collegiate game, singled with two outs and Medeiros followed with the two-run double to deny the Bruins a shutout victory. Johnson finished with two hits and the run to lead the Aggie hitters.

Juniors Ty Kelly and Kyle Mihaylo and freshman Scott Kalush accounted for the other two Aggie hits.

Following a two-run third, the Bruins broke loose for seven runs in the fourth behind two-run singles from Gallego and Cohen. UCLA also scored runs off a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk to help capitalize the big inning. The Bruins scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull ahead 13-0.

The two teams continue the three-game series tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live and be accessed by going to the UC Davis baseball schedule.
