DAVIS, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Davis, 106-95, in a Big West Conference men's basketball game Saturday night at The Pavilion. Vince Oliver led UC Davis with a game-high 32 points while Josh Akognon led the Titans with 29. Cal State Fullerton led 48-47 at the half before outscoring the Aggies 58-48 in the second half. Mark Payne added 14 points for UC Davis while tying a career-high with 10 assists.
The loss drops UC Davis to 11-14 overall and 6-6 in the Big West while Cal State Fullerton improved to 13-12 and 7-6. Aaron Thompson scored 19, and Gerard Anderson finished with 18 for the Titans. Oliver's effort included a career-high seven three-pointers. Akognon also made seven treys.
Joe Harden scored five of the Aggies' first nine points to help UC Davis to a 10-5 advantage after four minutes. The sophomore would finish with 15 points. UC Davis upped the margin to 13 after a Ryan Silva three-pointer made it 28-15 with 9:18 left in the half.
The Titans countered with a 24-8 run and led 39-36 at the 3:30 mark. Cal State Fullerton led by as many as four points before an Oliver jumper just before time expired pulled UC Davis within 48-47 at the half.
The Aggies were unable to get the lead back in the second half. An Oliver trey at the 17:01 mark made it 57-54 before Cal State Fullerton went on a 13-2 run to open up a 70-56 cushion with 11:18 remaining. The Titans would keep the lead in double figures for the remainder of the game.
Both teams shot over 50 percent with the Titans finishing at 56 percent. The Aggies made 53 percent of their attempts. Cal State Fullerton shot 48 percent from beyond the arc after going 12-for-25. UC Davis attempted 36 long-range shots and made 13. The Titans committed just seven turnovers compared to 14 for the Aggies.
