The Aggies advanced to play Syracuse in the championship - its only other Big East foe - losing to the Orange 75-55.

A QUICK LOOK AT YALE
Yale brings a two-game winning streak into its matchup with the Aggies, posting a road win at Bucknell (54-50) on Dec. 5 then following with a 61-57 victory over visiting Boston University (61-57) two days later... LAST GAME: UC DAVIS 72, SACRAMENTO STATE 64

The schools are tied 32.5-32.5 heading into the new year... UC Davis led the entire way on Hamilton Court, opening a 9-0 lead less the four minutes into the game thanks to four points from Riecks and a three-point play from P Lisa Peterson... Sacramento State whittled the deficit to just three points on two occasions before a three-pointer from Riecks and a layup from Meggison helped push the advantage to 24-12 with 7 minutes, 3 seconds left before half... The Aggies led 32-24 at halftime after neither team shot the ball particularly well... Sacramento State made 28.6 percent while the Aggies were at 32.4... Trailing 64-50 with 2:42 to go, Sacramento State rallied with a strong finish... G ASHLEY GARCIA had a pair of three-pointers while F EMILY CHRISTENSEN and G TIKA Koshiyama-Diaz each had one down the stretch for the Hornets which got to within 68-64 with 29 seconds left,,. However, UC Davis went 4 for 4 from the line the rest of the way while the Hornets had a turnover.

REBOUNDING CONTINUES TO BE A CHALLENGE
Outside of an advantage at Santa Clara and a tie on the boards in the opener at Seattle, UC Davis has been outrebounded in every game this season... The Aggies are averaging 31.3 rpg (opponents are 37.4) and currently rank last in the Big West... Also included is a 9th-place showing in offensive rebounds (8.7) and a 7th-place position in margin (-6.2)... They help balance their ledgers, however, by leading the conference in FG pct. defense (.389).

AGGIES ASSUME BIG WEST LEAD IN STEALS
Thanks to 15 steals against Sacramento - and 28 over their past two games - the Aggies are now first in the Big West in steals (11.3 pg.).... Their recent strong showings have also bumped them up to 27th nationally, their highest NCAA position... UC Davis has posted at least a dozen swipes in six of their nine games... G Hana Asanohas helped in the area with an average of 2.4 pg... She leads the Big West and is 27th nationally.

UC DAVIS STILL NEWCOMERS TO NCAA DIVISION I
The Aggies are in their third year of Division I status, having started their new D-I life in 2007... UC Davis, one of the first three schools to go through a four-year reclassification, was one of the most dominant Div. II programs, having won six Directors' Cups in eight years for the most successful overall athletics program... The Aggies began their transition in 2003-04, started playing a Div. I schedule in 2005-06 and then received Div. I certification during in 2007-08... UC Davis enjoyed a strong inaugural season at its new level, finishing second in the Big West regular-season, advancing to the conference championship and then receiving a bid to the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).

HEINTZ NAMED BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
W Heidi Heintz, who averaged 13.3 points and was nearly perfect from the line during UC Davis' first three wins in early December, was named the Big West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Dec. 7... Heintz had a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds in UC Davis' 71-59 win at Saint Mary's on Dec. 1, followed with 12 points and a game-best seven boards in the Aggies' 74-56 victory at Santa Clara on Dec. 3, then scored 13 points during a 64-57 win over visiting Denver on Dec. 5... Heintz, who transferred to UC Davis from the University of San Francisco, shot 57.1 percent from the field and 93.8 percent (15 of 16) from the line... She is the Aggies' first Big West weekly honoree of the season.

DEFENSE SETTING EARLY TONE
UC Davis continues to lead the Big West in scoring defense during the early season... The Aggies have allowed less than 60 points in five of their six wins and have gone 0-3 when letting teams surpass that plateau... Sacramento State scored 64, the only time UC Davis has posted a win when giving up more than 60... UC Davis is the only Big West team allowing less than 60.0 ppg.

DONAGHE GETS EXTRA YEAR
W Haylee Donaghewas granted a clock extension in October 2008 by the NCAA due to injuries earlier in her Aggie career... That gave her two years of eligibility at the time but, unfortunately, a knee injury suffered at South Dakota State last December cut short one of those seasons... Donaghe completed her undergraduate degree in exercise biology in June 2008 and is currently enrolled in graduate studies at UC Davis, expecting to graduate with her master's degree in exercise biology next spring... Donaghe needs 252 points to become the 14th player in school history to surpass 1,000 for her career.

MINTUN SIDELINED WITH FOOT INJURY
P Paige Mintun, who leads the team in scoring (12.3), rebounding (4.3) FG pct. (.500) and blocks (10), missed Sunday's game against Sacramento State due to a right-foot injury... Mintun missed all but two games during her freshman season due to injury (earning a hardship waiver) and was sidelined for seven games midseason during her redshirt freshman campaign.

SIMPSON BECOMES ALL-TIME WINS LEADER
With a 53-50 win at Cal State Northridge last Mar. 4, Head coach Sandy Simpsonbecame the all-times win leader at UC Davis with 206... He owns a career mark in 13 seasons of 212-136 (.609)... He picked up his 200th career win on Jan. 4 with an 86-66 victory over visiting Cal State Northridge... Simpson surpassed former coach JORJA HOEHN (1988-95, 96-97) who amassed a 205-51 (.801) record during her impressive tenure... Simpson served as an assistant coach under Hoehn as well as mentor PAM GILL-FISHER (1975-79, 81-86, 87-88) who posted 164 career victories.

UC DAVIS SCORES BIG ON ALL-BIG WEST TEAMS
The Aggies were well-represented on the All-Big West Conference teams last year, despite finishing 7-9 in league and in fifth place... P Paige Mintun, who led the team in scoring (13.0 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg) and blocks (31), was named to the All-BWC first team... W Lauren Juric, who canned 35 three-pointers, was named the Big West Freshman of the Year... W Kasey Riecks, who started all 29 games, was selected to the All-Freshman team... She and Juric were also tabbed honorable mention all-league.

UC DAVIS TO BE TESTED WITH SCHEDULE
The Aggies will face a 2009-10 schedule that features teams from the Big XII, Pac-10 and Big East conferences during a rugged nonconference slate... Among the teams they have faced or will face are preseason No. 2 Stanford (Nov. 22), NCAA Tournament team Kansas State (Dec. 29) and Women's National Invitational Tournament participant Creighton (Nov. 27)... The Aggies will also battle rival UC Santa Barbara twice during the league season... The Gauchos advanced to last year's NCAA postseason with the Big West's automatic berth... UC Riverside, another Big West foe, earned a spot in the WNIT.
