STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford defeated UC Davis, 85-69, in a non-conference men's basketball game Sunday night at Maples Pavilion. Landry Fields led Stanford (5-3) with 21 points while Jack Trotter added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Mark Payne led UC Davis (3-6) with 21 points, and freshman Ryan Sypkens finished with career-high 16.
Dominic Calegari scored 13 points for the Aggies, and Ryan Howley finished with 10. Howley, Calegari and Julian Welch each grabbed six rebounds as UC Davis played its second straight game without four players due to injuries.
The Cardinal opened the game with a 14-0 run to seize early control. Landry Fields scored the first five points for Stanford as it held the Aggies off the scoreboard until a pair of free throws by Calegari at the 15:35 mark. The Aggie senior would score eight points in the first half, which ended with a 47-24 Stanford advantage.
UC Davis opened the second half on a 5-0 run when Sypkens made one of his four three-pointers on the night. A steal by Calegari ended in a fastbreak layup by Payne, and the lead was down to 47-29.
Stanford then used a 10-2 run to break out to a 57-31 lead with 16:52 to play. The Cardinal led by as much as 63-36 at the 15:23 mark. The Aggies trailed 82-62 with 3:35 to play before closing the game on a 7-3 burst.
Sypkens scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half. The freshman went 6-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Payne scored 15 points in the second half.
Stanford shot 54 percent for the game while UC Davis finished at 42 percent. The Cardinal outrebounded the Aggies, 36-30. After trailing by 23 at the half, UC Davis outscored Stanford 45-38 in the second half.
It was the second straight game the Aggies played without Joe Harden, the team's third-leading scorer and leading rebounder.
UC Davis returns to action Thursday night when it plays at Fresno State.
