DAVIS, Calif. - Heidi Heintz scored a game-high 23 points and UC Davis built a 24-point lead in the first half as the Aggie women's basketball team beat Humboldt State 83-73 in an exhibition game at The Pavilion on Thursday night.
Sophomore Kasey Riecks added 12 points and Paige Mintun scored 11 while adding a game-high five blocks for UC Davis which will open the regular season on Nov. 13 at Seattle University. Guard Paige Peterson scored 20 points and had four assists for the Divison II Lumberjacks, who won 24 games last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Brittney Taylor scored 15 points while Bree Halsey had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Keyed by a three-pointer from Taylor Kilgore, the Lumberjacks took a quick 5-0 lead. However, UC Davis scored the next 10 points, with Heintz scoring five, and the Aggies took a lead they would never relinquish. A layup from Riecks with 7 minutes, 45 seconds to play in the half made it 28-9 while Ashley Curry's jumper nearly three minutes later pushed the lead to 37-13.
The Lumberjacks rallied the rest of the half, outscoring the Aggies 17-8 to make it 45-30 at intermission.
Humboldt State gradually cut the lead in the second half, getting to within 12 points three times before Andrea Bobic's three-pointer cut it to 61-51 with 11 minutes to play. The Lumberjacks made it 73-65 with four minutes to go but Heintz scored six straight points for UC Davis to swell the lead back to 14 points and the Aggies kept the advantage in double-digits the rest of the way.
UC Davis shot 55 percent from the field and made 78 percent from the line (21 of 27). Humboldt State made eight of their final 13 three-pointers to finish 9 of 21 from long distance.
The Aggies will also play Washington State (Nov. 15) on their trip to the Pacific Northwest.
