KAHUKU, Hawaii - Alice Kim shot a 5-under 67 and is in first place, freshman Demi Runas is tied for second just one shot behind, and the UC Davis women's golf team has a seven-shot lead after the first round of the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational on Monday at Turtle Bay Resort.
UC Davis, ranked No. 27 by Golfweek, leads eight teams ranked in the top 50 including No. 1 UCLA, No. 8 USC and No. 10 Cal. The Aggies shot a 7-under 281 over the first 18 holes and were the only team to shoot in the red on Monday. San Jose State is in second at par 288, Cal is in third at 2-over and USC is in fourth a 3-over. UCLA and Oregon are tied for fifth at 4-over.
Kim and Runas helped spark UC Davis to its strong first day. Senior Kimberly Johnson is tied for 13th after shooting 72, freshman Amy Simanton had a 74 and is tied for 23rd, and junior Chelsea Stelzmiller is tied for 73rd after finishing with a 79. Junior Katie Sisler, playing as an individual, is tied for 43rd after her round of 76.
The tournament's 18 teams will play two courses during the three-day, 54-hole event with the par-72, 6,261-yard George Fazio Course at Turtle Bay Resort hosting the first round. Beginning her round on the 10th hole, Kim was one under after nine holes but carded an impressive 4-under 32 on her back nine. She had four birdies and no bogeys over her final nine holes.
Runas used three birdies and just one bogey on her front nine to move to two under early one and then played a solid back nine with two birdies and seven pars to come in with a 68. She's tied with Cristin Corpus of San Jose State, just one back of Kim. Three birdies and 13 pars helped Johnson balance her scorecard while Simanton had three birdies on her front nine to help her start strong. Stelzmiller had a pair of birdies while Sisler picked up three.
UC Davis' best finish of the season was a second-place performance at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at Denver. The Aggies are looking for their first tournament title since capturing the USF/Richmond Country Club Invitational in 2007.
Teams will play the same course on Tuesday before switching to the 6,261-yard Arnold Palmer Course for Wednesday's final round.
