DAVIS, Calif. - Alex Tiffin becomes the second future Aggie to join the men's basketball program, announced head coach Gary Stewart. Tiffin signed a National Letter of Intent as part of the early signing period. He is a 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward from Thousand Oaks, Calif., and currently stars for Thousand Oaks High School. He was the Southern Section II Player of the Year last year as a junior.
Tiffin is coming off a 2008-09 campaign in which he averaged 13.7 points and seven rebounds per game. He shot 50-percent from the field and was named First-Team All-Marmonte League as well as First-Team All-County. He's ranked No. 50 in the nation among junior power forwards by www.espn.com. Tiffin is also an ESPN-Cal High Sports First-Team All-State selection for juniors.
"Alex was heavily recruited, and we feel extremely fortunate to get him," said Stewart. "He is a fierce competitor with a superior work ethic. Alex is a hybrid power forward in that he is physical enough to bang with the big guys inside and agile enough to step out and play on the perimeter."
Tiffin helped lead the Lancers to an impressive 30-3 record in 2008-09 as well as a perfect 14-0 mark in the Marmonte League. The Lancers won the Southern Section IIAA before advancing to the second round of the state championship. Tiffin poured in 24 points to go along with seven rebounds, seven blocks and three assists in the section championship game victory.
"Alex is the definition of a winner," added Stewart. "He has been well coached in high school and with his AAU teams. He has a refined back-to-the-basket post game and is a relentless rebounder. Even more impressive is his ability to be a great teammate."
At Thousand Oaks, Tiffin plays for Rick Endres. His AAU coaches have included Etop Udo-Ema with the Compton Magic as well as Tim Bruen with the Simi Valley Cagers. He is a Third-Team "Best in the West" selection and also played in "The Battle of the Best" for the South team.
Tiffin joins Mike Kurtz (C, 7-0, 190, Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek HS) as part of the Aggies' early signing class.
