UC Davis In Third At Las Vegas Collegiate

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Freshman Demi Runas and senior Kimberly Johnson each fired 1-over 73s on Tuesday, junior Alice Kim is in fifth place overall and the UC Davis women's golf team is a strong third in the team standings heading into Wednesday's final round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

UC Davis, which was tied for second with Arizona after Monday's first day, shot a 10-over 298 and is at 6-over 582 after 36 holes. The No. 36 Aggies are just three shots back of second-place No. 23 Washington and five strokes off the pace being set by No. 17 Arizona. Fifteenth-ranked Florida is four shots behind UC Davis in fourth place.

Runas and Johnson paced the Aggies on Tuesday, each of them improving their scores from the first round. Johnson cut six shots off her opening-round 79, playing her front nine at par and then using six pars and a birdie to help her finish with a 73 and move into a tie for 48th at 8-over 152.

Runas had five birdies and six pars overall on her way to a 73, picking up either a par or bogey on eight of the nine holes of her back nine. Runas is tied for 29th at 149.

Kim, who sizzled the 6,233-yard course on Monday with a 67 to tied for the early lead, had a rough start on Tuesday with five bogeys over her first seven holes. But she steadied herself by playing the next nine holes at 2-under to post a 76. Kim is in fifth place at 1-under 143.

Freshman Amy Simanton also had a 76 and remains near the top of the leaderboard in a tie for 12th place at 2-over 146. The Aggie freshman had three birdies during Tuesday's play. Junior Chelsea Stelzmiller, played the front nine at 3-over but finished with an 82 and is tied for 57th at 153.

Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville and Sherlyn Popelka of Arizona are tied for the lead at 6-under 138 after rounds of 67 and 69, respectively. Kim is just five shots behind the leaders.

A dozen teams ranked in the top 50 by Golfstat are competing in the three-day tournament. UC Davis, ranked 36th, is the lowest ranked team in the top six. The tournament concludes with an 8 a.m. shotgun round on Wednesday.
