Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown (live scoring and results)
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Alice Kim's 5-under 67 in Monday's first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown vaulted her into a tie for first place while also pacing the UC Davis women's golf team - which has three players among the top 12 places - into a tie for second.
The 36th-ranked Aggies fired a 4-under 284 on Monday and are tied with No. 17 Arizona, just one shot off the pace being set by 19th-ranked Louisville. Kent State, ranked 29th, is in fourth at 3-under while No. 23 Washington is in fifth at 1-under.
UC Davis freshman Amy Simanton shot 70 and is tied for seventh while junior Chelsea Stelzmiller is tied for 12th after her round of 71. Freshman Demi Runas finished with a 76 and senior Kimberly Johnson had a 79 and are tied for 62nd and 83rd, respectively.
Seventeen teams, - not including a second squad from host UNLV - are competing at the 6,233-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club with 12 of them ranked among Golfstat's top 50.
Kim opened her day with a bogey but two birdies got her below par as she made the turn to the back nine. She opened that side with three birdies over her first four holes and then added an eagle at the par-5 16th to push her round to 5-under.
Simanton had five birdies, including three straight to end her day, helping to offset three straight bogeys earlier. Stelzmiller had a steady round of three birdies, 13 pars and just two bogeys during her round of 71, Runas had four birdies and Johnson played her back nine just three over.
Kim is tied with Kelli Shean of Arkansas while Kasey Clausen of Colorado State is in third at 4-under. Simanton is in a five-way tie for seventh while Stelzmiller is in a 10-player logjam for 12th place. A total of 21 players broke par in the first round.
UC Davis will begin the second round at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday. The 54-hole tournament concludes on Wednesday.
