Four UC Davis players equaled or improved their scores in the second round on Tuesday as the Aggie women's golf team cut nine shots from its opening-round total to move into seventh place after two rounds of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Denver.
UC Davis, which had a 13-over 301 on Tuesday, climbed one spot on the 13-team leaderboard heading into Wednesday's final round. The Aggies, at 35-over 611, are just one shot behind sixth-place Arkansas-Little Rock but only one in front of eighth-place Baylor.
Denver continues to lead the field, shooting a 2-under 286 to take a commanding 18-shot advantage over San Jose State at 3-under par. TCU is in third at 18 over while UC Irvine is fourth at 20 over.
The Aggies' Alice Kim continues to sit near the top of the leaderboard, shooting a 2-over 74 on Tuesday to finish the day tied for seventh at 2-over 146. The day was a good one for UC Davis which had no score higher than 76 in the second round.
Chelsea Stelzmiller matched her opening-round 76 with another in the second round and is tied for 20th while Kimberly Johnson cut three shots and fired a 76 to move into a tie for 32nd. Katie Sisler and Brittany Smith showed the most dramatic improvements with Sisler bettering Monday's score by seven strokes with her 76, tying her for 51st. Brittany Smith sliced nine strokes to shoot 75 and is tied for 58th.
The Aggies combined for a dozen birdies and collectively played tough on the front nine where they were just eight shots over par. Sisler played the front even while Kim, Smith and Johnson were each just one over on the back.
UC Irvine's Jane Chin assumed the individual lead, shooting a blistering 5-under to go 8-under 136 for the tournament. She leads first-day leader Stephanie Sherlock by two shots and Eric Moston of San Jose State by four. Five players are in the red with 18 holes remaining.
The tournament concludes on Wednesday at the 6,605-yard Highlands Ranch Golf Club.
