Aggies Move Into Third At Season-Opening Tournament

Sept. 19, 2008

Dick McGuire Invitational (live scoring)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Sophomore standout Chelsea Stelzmiller fired a 4-under 69 on Friday and jumped 32 spots on the leaderboard as the UC Davis women's golf team moved up a spot into third place after two rounds at the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational at the University of New Mexico.

The Aggies are at 10-over 594 after cutting two strokes off their opening-round effort to shoot 4-over 296 on Friday. That left them nine shots behind co-leaders Pepperdine and New Mexico but three shots in front of Texas and Colorado State which are tied for fourth.

Stelzmiller's 69 in Friday's second - tied with three others for the tournament's low round - was eight shots better than her 77 from Thursday and moved her from a tie for 38th into a tie for sixth at even-par 146. The 54-hole, 16-team event is being played at the par-73, 6,167-yard UNM Championship Course, site of last year's NCAA Championship.

Alice Kim played another solid round on Friday, shooting a 1-over 74 to sit 10th at 1-over 147 heading into Saturday's final 18 holes. Senior Brittany Smith had a 76 and is tied for 16th at 3-over 149 while sophomore Katie Sisler had a 77 and is tied for 31st at 6-over 152. Kimberly Johnson improved on her opening-round score by carding an 83 and is 88th at 169.

Stelzmiller blitzed the front nine on Friday to the tune of four birdies and just one bogey, including three birdies in four holes, making the turn at 3-under. A birdie at the par-3 12th put her four under before she finished with five consecutive pars.

After bogeying her first hole, Kim bounced back with a pair of birdies on the front nine before two bogeys and seven pars on the back left her just 1 over at the end of her round. Smith had two birdies in her round, including one at the par-5 18th to finish with a 76 while Sisler was even after nine holes and 4 over on the back to card a 77. Johnson had five straight pars on the back to help highlight her second round.

Jodi Ewart of host New Mexico matched Stelzmiller with a 69 and moved into first place on the individual leaderboard at 5-under 141. She holds a one-shot lead over Jayvie Agojo of Pepperdine and a two-shot advantage over four others. Stelzmiller is in a four-way tie for sixth place.

The Aggies continue to lead bothy preseason-ranked No. 27 UNLV and No. 23 TCU who are sixth and tied for eighth, respectively, in the team standings.

The tournament concludes with a shotgun round beginning at 7 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday.
