LINCOLN HILLS, Calif. -- Freshman Alice Kim had a 1-over 73 on Friday while teammates Sydney Roughton and Katie Sisler each had 74's as UC Davis climbed to within one shot of the top eight heading into the final round of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf West Regional at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

The top eight teams from the regional will advance to the national finals at the University of Mexico later this month. UC Davis is tied with 18th-ranked California for ninth place at 20-over par 596, just one shot behind No. 28 Tulsa for eighth place and three back of No. 23 Stanford which is in seventh.

The Aggies and Golden Bears are one shot in front of No. 36 Ohio State, which is in 11th, and two in front of No. 27 BYU, which is 12th. Eight teams are within seven shots of the top eight places going into Saturday's final 18 holes. UC Davis is the only unranked team in the top 16 after 36 holes.

The Aggies - tied for 15th after Thursday's play - made their move thanks to a team score of 296 which also included a 3-over 75 by junior Bryana Gregory at the 6,338-yard Orchard Course at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. UC Davis cut four shots off its opening-round 300 from Thursday.

Kim opened her second round with three bogeys on the front nine, making the turn at 3-over. However, she birdied the par-5 10th and the par-3 11th before adding another at the par-4 14th to get back to even. Kim bogeyed the final hole but still cut four shots off her first-round 77 and is tied for 44th place.

Roughton, a senior from Davis, played her second consecutive round near par, firing three birdies over her final 10 holes, including a birdie on the par-5, 502-yard 17th that helped her post her 74. She had an impressive 73 on Thursday and is tied for 21st.

Like Kim, Sisler lowered her score significantly after starting the regional with a 78 on Thursday. Friday's round opened with a double-bogey on the first hole but she rebounded to birdie three of the last four holes before making the turn, helping her get back to even. She then had a 38 on the back to finish 2-over and is tied for 61st.

Gregory was another Aggie that improved her score from the first round, playing steady golf on the front nine with eight pars and then covering the back with a 38 to card a 75, four shots lower than Thursday's 79. She is tied for 74th.

Freshman Chelsea Stelzmiller, who had a team-best 72 in the first round, had a 79 on Friday. She had a 41 on the front nine but a pair of birdies on the back, including one at the par-4 18th, helped her play the back nine just two shots over par and put her in a tie for 54th.

The tournament marks the inaugural NCAA postseason apperance for the Aggies who are in their first year of Division I status and earned an at-large berth in the regional after an impressive season which featured one tournament win and three runner-up placings.

Besides the top eight teams, the top player not on an advancing team will also earn a spot at the national finals.

UCLA currently has a six-shot lead at the NCAA Central Regional while Florida leads by three in the NCAA East Regional.

UC Davis will tee of in the final round beginning at 9 a.m.
