STANFORD, Calif. -- Senior Sydney Roughton is tied for 20th after shooting a 77 on Friday during the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational at the par-71, 6,117-yard Stanford Golf Course as the UC Davis women's golf team ended the first 19 holes tied in 10th place.
The Aggies shot a team score of 318, two shots behind ninth-place Washington State and two in front of 11th-place Portland State. California was one of just two schools to break 300 in the first round of the 36-hole event, firing an 11-over 295 to take a two-stroke lead over Washington. Host Stanford is in third five shots off the pace.
Roughton was one of two Aggies to break 80 on a difficult day in which just 39 of 74 players shot below the mark. Freshman Katie Sisler was the other UC Davis player to do so, tying for 28th after her 78. Roughton's 37 on the front nine was the team's best.
Freshman Alice Kim, who tied for second last week at the NCAA West Regional Preview, carded an 81 on Friday and is tied for 47th while freshman Chelsea Stelzmiller had an 82 and is tied for 53rd. Junior Bryana Gregory is tied for 58th after recording an 83. Sophomore Lauren Dobashi, playing as an individual, had an 80 and is tie for 40th.
No player shot under par and only one - leader Karinn Dickinson of Washington - had par. She leads three players, including teammate Anya Alvarez, by a stroke.
The Peg Barnard Invitational features eight teams ranked in the top 60 by Golfweek Magazine.
The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Saturday.
