EUGENE, Ore. -- UC Davis has four players among the top 20 placings after 36 holes of the Oregon Duck Invitational as the Aggie women's golf team ended Monday's play in second place, just one shot behind 45th-ranked Oregon.
UC Davis, which already has a tournament title and four top-five finishes during the 2007-08 season, opened the 54-hole event with a 14-over 302 over the par-72, 6,052-yard Eugene Country Club course. The Aggies then fired a 305 in the second round - the second-best score of the round - to finish the day at 31-over 607.
UC Davis rallied behind four players in the top 20 placings. Included is freshman Katie Sisler whose 72 in the opening round was the best of the day for the team and helped her tie for eighth-place after shooting a 78 in the second. Her 72 featured 16 pars, a birdie and just one bogey.
Freshman Chelsea Stelzmiller is close behind in 10th place at 7-over 151, while junior Bryana Gregory had rounds of 76 and 75 and is tied for 11th at 152. Stelzmiller shot a 77 over the first 18 holes but then led the Aggies with a 2-over 74 in the second.
Sydney Rougton had back-to-back 77's on Monday to complete the Aggie quartet near the top of the standings and is tied for 20th at 154. Kimberly Johnson had an 82 in each round and is tied for 57th.
Oregon had rounds of 297 and 309 to forge one-shot lead over UC Davis atop the 15-team leaderboard. Washington State is five shots behind the Aggies in third place while Washington is eight shots back in fourth. No. 16 California is tied with Washington for fourth.
Kendra Little of host Oregon is at 143 to lead all players, just one shot of Amy Enerorth of Washington State. Little had a 70 in the first round to help highlight her day.
The Aggies are looking to win a tournament for the second time this season after capturing the USF/Richmond Invitational in November. UC Davis has won at least one event during each of its three seasons of varsity status. The Aggies were second at the Kitahara Fresno State Invitational in February and were third at New Mexico State last October.
The final round will be played on Tuesday morning.
