Final Results from UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational
BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Freshman Chelsea Stelzmiller carded five birdies on Wednesday on her way to a second straight 3-under 69 as she joined UC Davis teammate Jee Park in a tie for eighth at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational in which the Aggie women's golf team finished seventh.
UC Davis posted a 3-under 285 in the final round - its best of the tournament and tied for the event's second-best of the day - to finish at 11-over 875. The Aggies placed in front of No. 46 Washington and No. 45 Indiana which were 10th and 11th, respectively, three shots behind. BYU, ranked 35th, stormed back in the final round to card a 6-under 282 for a 54-hole total of 5-under 859 and tied Washington State for the tournament title.
Stelzmiller enjoyed another impressive day for the Aggies, posting three birdies on the front nine and two more on the back to help counter a pair of bogeys as she carded a 3-under score for the second consecutive round. It helped her charge into the top 10 places on the final leaderboard, tying for eighth with four golfers.
Included in that tie for eighth was Park, who was 2 over after nine holes but birdied her 10th and 11th holes and then added another at the par-4 14th to help her shot a 2-under 34 on the back and post a 72. Stelzmiller and Park both finished the three-day event at the 6,204-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club at 2-under 214. Both players broke par for a tournament for the first time this season.
Park's 72 was one of three on the afternoon for the Aggies who also got strong showings from junior Bryana Gregory and freshman Katie Sisler. The pair had their best rounds of the tournament, each finishing with two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars. Gregory tied for 30th in the final standings while Sisler tied for 47th. Kimberly Johnson was just one shot over par at the turn before ending her round with a 77, also her best round of the event. She tied for 81st.
Cathryn Bristow of Oregon had a final-round 70 to finish at 8-under 208 and win by two shots over Ulrika van Niekerk of Texas Tech.
UC Davis returns to action at the Duck Invitational at the Univesrity of Oregon on Mar. 24-25.
