Singh, Curtis Win Big West Scholar-Athlete Honors

March 12, 2008

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior soccer player Dylan Curtis and sophomore volleyball player Avreeta Singh were selected as the UC Davis honorees for the 2007-08 Big West Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year program. Both student-athletes were selected for achievements in athletics and academics, as well as leadership and community service.

Each of the nine Big West Conference member institutions selects a male and female student-athlete who competed in a conference championship sport during the 2007 calendar year.

Curtis, a junior forward and managerial economics major from Pleasanton, Calif., was selected as team captain and Most Valuable Player last fall. He scored three goals with three assists to help the Aggies post a 12-5-3 overall record and a 7-3-2 conference record. UC Davis finished second in the Big West and earned its first-ever NCAA Division I tournament berth. Curtis, who also earned Big West Academic All-Conference honors, ranked among the league's leaders in total shots and game-winning goals.

Singh, a sophomore libero and pre-med exercise biology major from Fresno, Calif., earned honorable mention on the All-Big West Conference team. She led the Aggies with 495 digs and 23 service aces, ranking fifth in the league at 4.95 digs per game. Singh was a former high school valedictorian, a Regents Scholar and a 2006-07 participant of the university's esteemed Integrated Studies Honors Program. She was also selected to represent UC Davis at the 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

All winners will be honored at a breakfast gathering during the Big West Conference basketball tournaments in Anaheim on Thursday. This is UC Davis' first year as an official member of the Big West.
