Late Surge Lifts Loyola Past UC Davis

BALTIMORE, Md. - Loyola College defeated UC Davis, 67-64, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference men's basketball game at Reitz Arena. Mark Payne led UC Davis with 17 points, and Kyle Brucculeri added 12. Gerald Brown led Loyola (17-12) with 16 points. The game was part of the ESPNU BracketBusters event, which includes 50 games across the country this weekend.

UC Davis (8-19) opened the game red-hot from the field. The Aggies made 11 of their first 14 attempts, and that translated into a 28-19 lead with 7:43 left in the half after a jumper by Nathan Clark. The run included a pair of three-pointers by Dominic Calegari and Brucculeri.

The Greyhounds then went on an 11-2 run and tied the game at 30-30 on a Brett Harvey three-pointer with 4:30 left in the half. A Payne dunk with 1:21 left gave UC Davis a 36-33 lead, and the Aggies went to the break leading 38-37.

The Aggies continued to maintain a slim advantage for most of the second half. UC Davis led 44-39 after a jumper by Oliver with 17:46 left in the game. The Greyhounds countered with a 6-0 run to take a 45-44 lead.

Neither team led by more than three points over the next seven minutes. With UC Davis leading 48-45, Loyola went on a 7-0 run that swung the lead back to the home team, 52-48. Loyola still led 58-54 with five minutes left before UC Davis went on a 6-0 run. It started on a David Carter jumper and ended with a pair of free throws by both Payne and Vince Oliver, who finished with 11. That put the Aggies up 60-58 with 3:37 to play.

The Greyhounds had one more run left and outscored UC Davis 7-0 over the next three minutes and built a 65-60 lead with 17 seconds left. The Greyhounds led 67-62 before an Oliver layup closed out the scoring with two seconds remaining.

UC Davis shot 44 percent for the game while Loyola shot 43 percent. The Greyhounds outrebounded the Aggies, 40-23. UC Davis took advantage of 16 Greyhound turnovers while committing just nine.

Payne and Calegari each led UC Davis with five rebounds.

UC Davis is next in action Feb. 28 when it returns to Big West Conference play with a match-up at Pacific.
