DAVIS, Calif. - Cal Poly defeated UC Davis, 66-58, Thursday night in a Big West Conference men's basketball game at The Pavilion. The Aggies' Vince Oliver led all scorers with 19 points, and Dominic Calegari finished with 18. Both Oliver and Calegari posted seven rebounds. The short-handed Aggies had just eight available players for the game. The loss drops UC Davis to 8-18 overall and 2-11 in the Big West. Lorenzo Keeler led Cal Poly with 16 points.
UC Davis opened the game with an 11-4 run capped off by an Oliver three-pointer at the 14:08 mark of the first half, and the Aggies held the lead for the first 12 minutes of the game. The Mustangs took their first advantage with 8:06 left in the half on a Keeler trey to make it 16-15. Cal Poly built as much as a 36-25 lead with just under two minutes left in the half before going to the break with a 36-37 lead.
The Aggies nearly erased the deficit in the first three minutes of the second half. Three straight layups by Oliver followed by a Calegari bucket completed an 8-0 run to start the half and closed UC Davis within 36-35. Less than two minutes later, Oliver's second three-pointer of the night made it 41-40 Cal Poly.
The Mustangs responded with a 6-0 run and led 47-40 with 12:31 remaining. The Aggies again battled back and took a 57-56 lead on a Calegari trey with 4:39 left in the game. That would turn out to be the last field goal of the night for UC Davis as Cal Poly took the lead back for good on its next possession on a Keeler three-pointer. That started a 10-1 run to end the game.
UC Davis finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field and held Cal Poly to 42 percent. The Mustangs outrebounded the Aggies, 37-24.
The Aggies entered the game without their second-leading scorer Shane Hanson. The sophomore was averaging 10.6 ppg but missed the game due to a shoulder injury. David Carter, Oliver and Mark Payne each played at least 38 minutes in the game. Carter finished with nine points and a career-high six assists. Payne had five points and five rebounds.
UC Davis next faces Loyola (Md.) Saturday in Baltimore.
