UC Davis Takes Early Lead In Causeway Cup

Dec. 3, 2008

2008-09 Causeway Cup Standings

DAVIS, Calif. - With victories in six of seven head-to-head matchups, UC Davis has taken an early 22.5-point lead over rival Sacramento State after the fall season in the race for the 2008-09 Causeway Cup.

The Causeway Cup is an all-sports competition between the universities started in 2004-05. The Aggies won the inaugural trophy with the Hornets capturing the next two. UC Davis reclaimed the Causeway Cup during the 2007-08 year.

A total of 110 points are available this year with five points awarded for all matchups except those for volleyball, football, women's basketball and men's basketball which are each worth 10 points. In most instances where teams meet more than once throughout the season, points are divided amongst each matchup.

This year's Causeway Cup winner needs at least 55.33 points to claim the title. With 32.5 points already accumulated, the Aggies are off to a strong start. A total of 20 points are up for grabs over the next 11 days with men's basketball visiting Sacramento State on Wednesday and women's hoops traveling to face the Hornets on Dec. 13.

UC Davis jumped to a big lead this fall by capturing victories in women's soccer (5 pts), men's soccer (5 pts), men's cross country (5 pts), women's cross country (5 pts), volleyball (10) and men's golf (2.5). The Hornets' 10 points came with a football victory in the Causeway Classic in November.

The teams will not meet again until early January when the gymnastics teams battle in the first of three head-to-head matchups. There are 19 contests between the Aggies and Hornets remaining in 2008-09, finishing with the Causeway Duals in track and field at Sacramento State on May 1.
