DAVIS, Calif.-- UC Davis senior forward Quincy Amarikwa was named the Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year and fellow senior Dylan Curtis earned Midfielder of the Year honors to highlight the 2008 conference awards that were announced Tuesday night. Amarikwa and Curtis become the first Aggies to receive the honors. Senior Jordan Vanderpoorten was named to the second team while senior Sule Anibaba and junior Paul Marcoux earned honorable mention.
Amarikwa, a native of Bakersfield, completed his final regular season as the conference leader in goals scored (15) and was second in points (31). Both are career highs and put him into the top five on the UC Davis career list. Amarikwa also led conference players with two Big West Player of the Week honors and two national team of the week accolades. He also became the first Aggie to receive national player of the week honors on Oct. 13. Amarikwa was named to the second team last season.
Curtis also enjoyed the best season of his Aggie career en route to his first all-conference honors. Curtis, a native of Pleasanton, tied for the conference lead with 10 assists and remains just one assist shy of the single season school record. He is also one assist shy of second on the all-time Aggie list. His assist total also led the nation during the early part of the season and continues to rank him in the top 15. Curtis also tallied a career-high five goals and 20 points to rank in the top 10 among conference players. In addition, Curtis tied Amarikwa for a conference-high two player of the week awards and two national player of the week honors. He is also one of only 10 finalists for the prestigious Lowe's Senior Class Award, which is presented to the best all-around senior student-athlete in nine different sports.
Vanderpoorten claimed his inaugural all-conference accolades with his second-team nod as a defender. A native of La Verne, Vanderpoorten was the only Aggie on the second team as he helped lead a defense that allowed only 0.85 goals per game and totaled seven shutouts. Vanderpoorten also supplied an assist during the Aggies' win over San Diego.
Anibaba and Marcoux nabbed honorable mention accolades to round out the Aggie honorees. It marks the second straight conference award for Anibaba, who was named to the second team last season. A Davis native, Anibaba finished third on the team with four goals and 10 points.
Marcoux, a native of Mountain View, helped in the offensive efforts with two goals and three assists for seven points. His assist total was second on the team. It is the first all-conference honors for Marcoux, who joined Amarikwa and Curtis as UC Davis recipients of weekly conference accolades this season.
