BOULDER CITY, Nev. - UC Davis sophomore Chelsea Stelzmiller birdied three of her first seven holes on Monday on her way to a 2-under 70 and is tied for 12th after the first day of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, hosted by UNLV at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
The Aggies' women's golf team shot a 5-over 293 over the first 18 holes and is 14th in the team standings. The Aggies are only one stroke behind Indiana and just one in front of BYU.
Players and teams got the best of the 6,238-yard course in the opening round with 35 golfers shooting par or better. Long Beach State's Lee Lopez, ranked 59th nationally, shot an 8-under 64 to take an early three-stroke lead. Louisville, meanwhile, fired an 8-under 280 as a team, tying Pepperdine for first, two shots in front of UNLV and Oklahoma State.
Seven of the 18 teams entered broke par on Monday.
Sophomore Alice Kim had a 1-over 73 for UC Davis and is tied for 37th place while sophomore Katie Sisler was one shot back and tied for 51st. Senior Brittany Smith carded a 76 and is tied for 67th while senior Bryana Gregory is 82nd after a 78.
Stelzmiller got off to a hot start on Monday, posting birdies on a pair of par-5 holes as well as the par-3, 15th. She then rattled off nine straight pars before taking her only bogey.
Kim had four birdies in her round while Sisler played a very steady round with 16 pars and just two bogeys. Smith had two birdies while Gregory birdied two of her first three holes.
Cindy LaCrosse of Louisville, Pernilla Lindberg of Oklahoma State and Lisa McCloskey of Pepperdine are each tied for second after 67's.
The tournament continues with 18 holes on Tuesday and Wednesday. UC Davis will begin play at 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday and will be matched with Indiana and BYU.
